| Sacred Rite News : Sacred Rite: Resurrection -Hawaiian Heavy Metal Reborn / Makato Featured CD Releases |
| Posted by Mary Gilbert on 2008/1/29 8:30:00 (224 reads) |
SACRED RITEMark Kaleiwahea –lead vocals, guitars Jimmy Caterine – guitars, backing vocals
Peter Crane – bass guitar, keys, backing vocals Kevin Lum – drums, percussion Formed in 1981, Sacred Rite is known to their island home and to various metal clichés around the world as Hawaiian Heavy Metal icons. As part of the underground heavy metal explosion of the early eighties, Sacred Rite saw moderate success with metal fans around the world.
Their first two independent releases, Sacred Rite and The Ritual, reached as far as Europe and Japan, receiving rave reviews in metal magazines such as Kerrang, Burnn, Metal Hammer, Metal Forces and in the US –Hit Parader. Selling nearly 14,000 units between the two LP’s worldwide was quite a feat for an independent, self contained unit, especially considering that it was done from the middle of the Pacific Ocean with no inter-net to speak of –as it hadn’t even been invented yet.
Following the success of these two records, Sacred Rite recorded Is Nothing Sacred, which was picked up by Budisque in Holland and Restless in the US, receiving distribution through Capitol Records. US tour dates followed along with opening slots for Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne, Triumph, and Yngwie Malmsteen.

New Research On Musicians And Breast Cancer

Sarah Schmalenberger, hornist and musicologist, has launched the Life and Livelihood Study at http://www.musiciansurvivor.org in order to examine the physical and occupational well-being of women musicians who have had breast cancer. This national study has been designed to develop a profile of how the diagnosis and treatment of the disease affects women musicians. Physical problems during recovery from breast cancer treatment can be particularly burdensome to musicians, because of their physically demanding occupations or avocations. Unfortunately, scientific research on the number of women musicians diagnosed with breast cancer and the medical and occupational well-being of musicians after breast cancer is essentially nonexistent. |

Mambo Mariachi Rock turned into One World on Share My Love
by Mark Kirby,

The term "one world," as it applies to music, makes one think of vapid New Age background sounds. This is where musicians take little exotic bits of music from Third World countries and turn rich cultural legacies into fast food sounds with no distinction and a wisp of the original flavor. It wasn't always this way. Back in your crazy Uncle's day - the 70's, the decade that will never die - bands like War, Mandrill and Santana had no trouble mixing the music that they heard and loved with their own cultural roots. Mandrill, in particular, was consciously created - personnel-wise - to include members with Latin and Caribbean roots to go with as black Americans and one of their psychedelic, white, hippie friends. These artists took the beat of the streets - jazz, soul, Caribbean and Mexican music into their hearts, minds and souls - and came out as a nice hybrid that took the fire and guts of these different music strands and not just the surfaces.

Blonde Thinking Leads To Year Of 'Scarlet' Behaviour

Glasswerk New Music Award winners 'Scarlet BLONDE' are set to become the band of 2008 as they take their first step to accomplishing their ambitious scheme to have 12 releases in one year.
Scarlet BLONDE's plan is to release 8 singles, 1 EP, their debut Album 'Bedroom Superstars' and two 'B Albums'. The first is 'Bedroom Superstars [Raw]'- a Live album which will be recorded in March at Radio 2XS's Barn Sessions and will be accompanied by a documentary. The second is 'Bedroom Superstars [Roasted]' - an album containing the bands own remixes of the songs from the main album, with nothing new added to original recordings. |

| Music Dish News : REVIEW: Chewy is Chewy Good |

Funk and jazz. Smoothed out but meaty, pungent beats made from an organ, Fender Rhodes piano, bass, and fat back drums. A woman's soulful voice; doin' it like Tina Turner said back in the day when she and Ike took the gentle, country, rock song "Proud Mary" and dowsed it with grease and lit it on fire: nice and easy then nice and rough. Yeah, we've been hearing this sound from Chaka Khan, representing the funky soul side of the sound to Norman Connors and vocalist Jean Carn playing their unique brand of multi-cultural, freedom jazz. For those opening your ears for the first time in the 1990's, there was the Brand New Heavies, whose live action British-born acid jazz (the funk breaks from '60's and '70's artists like Horace Silver, drummer Idris Muhammad,! and electric saxophonist Eddie Harris) injected a hip hop flava, which was the main seasoning on the neo funk and soul souffle of that time.

A fully convincing Singer-Songwriter / Roots-Rock, in short Americana album, that excels with a refreshing variety, superb musicians and wonderfully crafted lyrics. Speace's lyrical elegance and the inventiveness of her finely selected metaphors intertwine very convincingly with the craft of her band, The Tearjerks and give each of the 13 songs its very unique identity. Boredom never comes near the listener, of course." Home of Rock (Germany) |
